New York, New York. The city, it's often said, so good they named it twice. And a city which, it's just as often said, it takes an insane man to wish to live in.

People in our world accept this dichotomy because New York has everything to offer. It truly is the city that never sleeps, and there's so much to do that one almost doesn't mind being stabbed once in a while for doing it.

But this site isn't our world. It's the World of Darkness. And if you think New York's bad for us, pity those who have to live in this shadowy, threatening place in a world where the inhabitants don't live in New York because they're willing to make that trade-off, but because they don't have a choice.

The World of Darkness is a very dark place. Cases like that of Kitty Genovese are not uncommon as we like to think they are in the real world. This is a world where no one wants to get involved. It isn’t that your average citizen is evil, though there is plenty of that to go around as well, but most people are just apathetic and scared.

Long ago it became clear that they couldn’t change the world, they couldn’t really make a difference; so why should they risk their own neck to help someone they don’t even know. If you get lucky someone seeing you assaulted will call the cops for you, but most of the time they just assume that someone else has already taken care of it for you. Between the gangs and the corrupt cops many places are not safe to walk alone in at night.

Justice is something reserved for those that can afford it. The public defenders that the court will assign those that can’t pay are the lowest of the low. They are the lawyers that barely managed to pass the BAR. Evidence will disappear or reappear if the price is right.

Charities that are frauds where none of the money goes where it is supposed to are so common that they don’t even make the news anymore. People that might have given donations to help have seen one too many stories of people just padding the wallet of some con artist and instead pass on donating leaving the legitimate charities badly underfunded. As a result the homeless shelters that remain open have a lower capacity leaving many to die on the streets in winter as indifferent citizens step over them on their way about their lives.

So come with us, if you dare. There's no hand to take. No comfort to be had from your peers. There's just decay and death, and the dedicated few who are trying to save the world before it's too late.
